WHY THERE IS NO IRS RATE PRINTED IN IT Because it would be wrong by January. The standard rate changes most years and has been revised mid-year before — a number baked into a file sold today goes stale in every copy already downloaded. So the rate is a cell you set, with a pointer to irs.gov. A wrong rate in a tax tool is worse than no rate at all.

WHY THE GREY CELLS ARE LOCKED Every calculated cell is protected, because the fastest way to break a log is to overwrite a formula and not notice for eleven months. Type in the yellow cells. No password is set — you can unlock any sheet if you want to.
